Nova Sintra and Pawtucket sign official twinning proclamation
City of Pawtucket, May 23, 2026 (Bravanews) - The cities of Nova Sintra, on the island of Brava, and Pawtucket, in the United States, are formally twinned. The agreement reflects the historical ties between the two communities and has already resulted in the first practical support for the Cape Verdean municipality: the donation of an ambulance.
According to a CMB press release, the Mayor of Brava, Amândio Brito, and the Mayor of Pawtucket, Donald Grebien, signed the Official and Public Proclamation of Sister Cities. The protocol aims to strengthen cooperation in areas considered fundamental to the development of the island of Brava, such as health and education, culture and social experiences, governance and the economy.
"The signing of this protocol and the high-level meetings take the relationship with our diaspora to a new level, transforming our shared history into concrete actions that directly benefit those who live in Brava," the municipality's statement highlights.
As the first practical result of this new partnership, the Brava Town Council, represented by its Mayor, attended the official handover of an ambulance. The equipment is seen by the local authorities as an extremely important resource for strengthening the health response capacity and supporting the island's population.
The cooperation agenda in the USA also included a courtesy visit by Mayor Amândio Brito to the Mayor of Central Falls, Maria Rivera.
The state of Rhode Island is home to a large community of citizens of Cape Verdean origin. According to the municipality, this meeting in Central Falls served to strengthen ties with the local leadership, with a view to developing future exchanges and new strategic partnerships in the region.
